Tips for Adjusting to High Altitude

Fun Facts… Denver has a reputation for being the “mile high city” but Santa Fe and Albuquerque are actually higher in altitude. Santa Fe is 7,000 feet above sea level and Albuquerque is at 5,300 feet. Most people don’t realize that our altitude in northern New Mexico is well above a mile. And being so high up means that our air is rarefied and thinner.

Here’s a few tips so that you and your guests can safely enjoy your destination wedding in the Land of Enchantment!
Drink lots of water! – It usually takes about 48 hours to adjust to our altitude and staying hydrated helps. Before your trip to northern New Mexico, and while you are here, drink plenty of water, at least a gallon of agua per day. This is the best way to help your body easily adjust. Northern New Mexico is considered high desert and that means our low humidity level keeps the air dry, so you need about twice as much water here as you would drink at home.

Watch your alcohol intake – Save yourself for the wedding reception! I know it’s tempting to have a little too much fun the night before the wedding but limit how many cocktails or other alcohol you consume and you’ll have more energy and enjoy your wedding day more. Remember it will be a beautiful but very long day, especially for brides who will be getting up early to get ready. Staying hydrated and limiting your alcohol consumption will help you to look and feel your best!

Wear layers – No matter what the season, prepare to dress in layers. The sun and wind are powerful forces in New Mexico. It can feel much warmer than the actual temperature during the daytime, but then become very chilly after the sun sets. So remember to pack your favorite wrap, shawl or scarf for the evening reception.

Sunscreen & moisturizer are musts! – In northern New Mexico we have over 300 days of sunshine and much less water vapor in the air because of the high altitude. We are higher up and closer to the sun so that means less protection for your skin from damaging rays and wind. Remember, you’ll want to protect and preserve your skin for all those amazing wedding photos! So don’t forget to wear your sunscreen, sunglasses and apply lots of hand moisturizer and lip balm throughout your stay, especially in the winter months.

Monitor your physical activity – Even if you’re in shape, you might find yourself huffing and puffing as you climb a flight of stairs here in the City Different. The effects of physical exertion are more intense at high altitude. If you normally workout for an hour daily at home, you might try keeping it to 30 minutes during your vacation in the Land of Enchantment.

Enjoy your trip! – Here’s wishing you a wonderful wedding and enjoy your time in our high desert mountains of northern New Mexico.

She’s Like Texas

Just when you think you’re all set in life, content with who and where you are, that’s when love finds you. For Hollie and PJ it happened just like that!

What a sweet Texas couple! Hollie looked like a winter snow princess all bundled up as we ventured outdoors to take photos around the La Posada property before the sun set. They were gifted with a beautiful snowy winter’s day in Santa Fe. It was cold outside but Hollie & PJ said “I do” encompassed by the warmth of their family and friends. Congrats to the newly weds! Have a very Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year!

Let’s say “I do” at La Fonda!

The simply stunning wedding of Jessica and Caitlin took place at La Fonda on the Plaza in Santa Fe. It was an absolutely perfect fall day and their wedding was wonderful, seriously one of the best, most heartfelt and fun celebrations I’ve ever had the pleasure of witnessing! The sweetest part of my job was watching two families generously give their love and support to their daughters as they took their wedding vows. Congrats to Jess and Cait and thank you for including me in such an awesome day!

Love is in the Stars!

Katie and Jared journeyed from Tucson, where they both work as astronomers at the University of Arizona, to New Mexico to tie the knot in Katie’s former home town of Los Alamos. Their wedding day was so very sweet! The ceremony was held mid-day at the historic Fuller Lodge, as a gentle rain fell outside cooling off the hot summer’s day. Then later that afternoon the couple and their guests traveled to Delancey Street to celebrate their nuptials against the backdrop of stunning Swan lake with all it’s weeping willows. Cheers to the newlywed couple…thank you Katie and Jared for allowing me to share in such a lovely day!

Just the two of us!

When I got a call with a 903 area code I just assumed it was a family member calling from back home, which is East Texas. But actually it was someone looking for a photographer for their upcoming elopement. I was so excited, I said… “are you calling from Tyler Texas?” …turns out the soon bride-to-be is also a native East Texan, what a small world!

It was just the two of them, saying their vows on a warm summer’s evening in Santa Fe at the historic Loretto Chapel. Some years ago on a hunting trip to New Mexico, David and his son drove through Santa Fe and visited the Chapel, and it made a profound impression on him. So naturally the Chapel was the perfect place for Kelly and David to say “I do”. And it was a joy for me to get to know them both and not only be their photographer but also a signed witness to the marriage!

Loretto Chapel – Nothing compares to the beauty of Loretto Chapel. I’ve had the privilege to photograph in the chapel for more than a decade and it never ceases to amaze me. Santa Fe enjoys the honor of being home to the first Gothic structure built West of the Mississippi river. The chapel is truly breathtaking and the miraculous staircase is an incredible architectural feat to behold. It is a joy for me to photograph couples at the Chapel.
